PENTIMENTO - The word pentimento is derived from the Italian 'pentirsi', which means to repent or change your mind. Pentimento is a change made by the artist during the process of painting.
These changes are usually hidden beneath a subsequent paint layer. In some instances they become visible because the paint layer above has become transparent with time. Pentimenti (the plural) can also be detected using infra-red reflectograms and X-rays. These can be found in many of the Old Master's paintings - in those days the paint was applied directly to the canvas without making an outline first. Often these original lines fitted in well adding a thought-provoking new dimension to the subsequent painting.
This will be my last post as it is getting increasingly difficult to reach the computer amidst the growing number of boxes :). Sometime in the next 3 weeks I move to my Father's house when the weather permits as we have to travel through two mountain passes. I will back sometime after the move.
I too had to look up pentimento, I should have read the comments first. I sounds an exciting move ...two mountain passes and the weather...more like an adventure. Will it be a permanent move then with all those boxes? Good luck either way.

oh and you're leaving it behind, so beautiful ...wonderful You, goodbye for now x
...and often one can see the form of that -original- lingering under the -change-, so many other words progressed from pentimento.
Fine one, Janice! _m
While writing a comment I edit. While writing a poem I edit. While living I edit. So does the artist. So does the recipient. So ... a great haiga.
Best wishes
